Horses in the Hunter (reprint 2012)
1820 - 2005
PART I. 1820 – 1900
Horses in the Hunter is Judy White’s ninth book and it confirms her status as one of Australia’s most eminent rural and regional historians. In it, she draws for the reader a bold historical map in compelling words of the initial European intrusion and settlement of the Hunter Valley outside of Newcastle at the mouth of the Hunter River. This map of settlement patterns and the taking up of land grants is divided into a sort of geographical quadrant of the Valley into which people of diverse backgrounds came, together with their horses and other livestock. They enter the Valley in successive waves and at similar times in the early colonial period from the south, the north, the east and the west. Such analysis explains also why the Valley was settled so early and so comprehensively.
